Pain, Addiction and the Law

The purpose of this course is to review the psychological aspects of addiction, understand who is at risk, and the legal ramifications of providing inappropriate opioid prescriptions. We will review both the new national guidelines (CDC) as well as the state (NC Medical Board) regarding opioid prescribing. We hope to accomplish a more thoughtful algorithm for opioid prescribing with consideration of long-term treatment and unwanted adverse effects. This course will be directed at all medical providers with special emphasis on primary care as the primary care provider prescribes roughly 50% of all opioid prescriptions.
