A bipartisan bill introduced by Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Susan Collins (R-ME) would help increase the number of addiction medicine providers across the country and help the millions of Americans who are struggling with substance use disorders. The Opioid Workforce Act of 2019 aims to ‘provide Medicare support for an additional 1,000 graduate medical education (GME) positions over five years in hospitals that have, or are in the process of establishing, accredited residency programs in addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry or pain medicine.’ Each hospital would be allowed up to 25 positions through the legislation.
