Our country is in the middle of an unprecedented drug overdose epidemic. There were more than 61,000 preventable drug overdoses in the U.S. in 2017 and more than 43,000 involved opioids. More lives could be saved if more people carried Naloxone. Did you know – North Carolina has a Standing Order to make it easier for people to get the FDA-approved medication at pharmacies around the state? Under the NC Naloxone Standing order, pharmacists may dispense Naloxone to anyone who is at risk for an opioid/opiate overdose or anyone in a position with intent to assist or aid someone who may experience an overdose. The newly redesigned website Naloxonesaves.org is an excellent resource for more information regarding the standing order in North Carolina and how pharmacists can get involved in the patient risk assessment and dispensing of Naloxone. The website also includes an interactive map to locate a pharmacy near you that carries Naloxone.
