This study indicates that most current guidelines on alcohol consumption are too high. The authors analyzed alcohol use data on almost 600,000 current drinkers without cardiovascular disease from 83 prospective studies across 19 countries. They found that all-cause mortality was lowest in people who drank 100 grams (7 US drinks) or less of alcohol per week but cardiovascular disease (excluding myocardial infarction) and alcohol consumption were associated at all levels.
