SBIRT is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for persons with substance use disorders, as well as those who are at risk of developing these disorders. Primary care centers, behavioral health practices, hospital emergency rooms, trauma centers, and other community settings provide opportunities for early intervention with at-risk substance users before more severe consequences occur.

This course offers participants an evidence-based protocol for quickly assessing the severity of substance use, offering effective brief interventions, and making appropriate referrals to treatment. Join us for a lively workshop offering more tools for your important work.

Learning methods include:
• Interaction and discussion
• Didactic presentation
• Sample videos
• Small group exercises with coaching and feedback

Objectives

  • Demonstrate basic skills of Motivational Interviewing, including OARS and Readiness Rulers
  • List the Stages of Change during brief interventions
  • Outline appropriate substance use screening tools (e.g., USAUDIT, DAST-10)
  • Explain and interpret the screening tool results within the context of the norms developed by the World Health Organizations and National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism
  • Describe ways to engage clients in a non-judgmental conversation about their use
  • Perform interventions and/or referrals to treatment
