Following a perfect storm of events, the United States is experiencing an unprecedented opioid epidemic dominating todays headlines and placing greater demands on the community and treatment providers to address the special issues and needs of persons suffering with opioid use disorders. Another casualty of this epidemic are the children living with parents suffering with this disease. This program will offer a current perspective on this epidemic including how we got here along with current prevalence and a science informed understanding of opioid use disorders and treatment best practices. This discussion will include the ways children exposed to addiction live in environments that are stressful, unpredictable and chaotic. As these children typically manifest, a variety of dysfunctional thoughts, emotional and behavioral patterns that negatively impact their cognitive and behavioral development and performance emerge. This session will consider the most effective ways those working in school and community settings can support these youth using a system of care approach.

  • Review causal factors and prevalence
  • Discuss clinical challenges and special population needs
  • Provide an overview of treatment best practices for opioid use disorders
  • Discuss the impact of opioid and other substance use disorders on children
  • Review strategies for helping youth of addicted parents
